*ALL MY LOVERS*

FADER PREMIERE

Starchild is the alias of Brooklyn’s Bryndon Cook, a 19-year-old American Apparel employee who has toured as a member of Solange’s backing band and has collaborated with Blood Orange and Chairlift's Patrick Wimberly. He also makes silky pop music by himself; his vibe feels very “NYC 2014,” romantic and nostalgic and a little bit vulnerable. The video for “All My Lovers” shows the wise-beyond-his-years teen hanging around in a series of stylish looks that, Cook says, are visual homages to his key influences: Sade, Prince, Terence Trent D’Arby, Morrissey (he initially suggested releasing the clip tomorrow, on Prince’s 56th birthday). “All My Lovers” is off Starchild’s upcoming project, Crucial—release date TBA.

*** R.I.P. 2.8.5 ***

Dear Todd P,

If The Rumors Are True…

Somewhere…near the river…further from the Bedford L Stop than you think…around the corner…NOT Glasslands…first star on the left and on ‘till morning…lied 285 Kent”.

That is a passage of text I will relay unto my children someday. Either that, or something sentimentally resembling that. I say that because it is gone now. The beloved venue (with a notoriously not so beloved sound system) is gone now from us forever, and I am truly shaken by it. I admit, compared to many others I know (& don’t), my 4 year relationship with Kent may seem like only lust compared to love many others had over a longer period of time. But for what it’s worth, those 4 years have been worth a lot.

When I moved to New York for college, I met my best friend Dave (Lord Raja) and  Evan (Slowlight). As soon as we began our musical kinship, we mutually fell in love with a few things: Toro Y Moi, Terrible Records & 285 Kent. It was our dream as post pubescents to annoy Pitchfork (which we managed to do through incessant emails & an eager internship on my part) and to perform at 285. We knew it wasn’t the greatest place in the world, but we also knew that every single performer we saw there (or heard was there, and MISSED) was life changing. The first time we went, I met Matt from Duck Tails/Real Estate & it let me know that these guys were humans too, albeit very tall.

Matt

The next time I remember going (though there were plenty of nights I stumbled in there), was the “first” time I officially met Dev. At that point, we had spoken virtually but not until I saw this, which was my first Blood Orange show. He did a tune called “Play Date” which was going to be on Cupid Deluxe but just “didn’t fit right with his mix” according to ‘Vonte.

From that point on, I always felt comfortable there. Which is a feeling I think a lot of folk my age felt in some shape or form coming there. This then leads to one of my biggest regrets in LIFE…missing the Odd Future Takeover that ended at Kent. One beautiful night in (November?) all of Odd Future ( Tyler & Earl, Frank Ocean, Mellowhype, The Internet, Domo & Mike G) all had shows at different venues around the city, but capped the night joining Trash Talk at 285. It was legendary. & I missed it. I will have to live with that. FOREVER. Thank you, 285.

One thing I didn’t miss, was hanging with my friends Sean Savage and Lo-Lo Rodriguez at their respective shows. They are two of my favorite artists & they always kind of STUN me when I see them perform, as critical and perceptive of their performances as they may be. Sean was doing “Other Life” and asked “DOES IT SOUND OK!?” i was like “*thumbs up*”!~!

SavageOne of my favorite memories will always be dancing, literally JUMPING to Blue Hawaii for extended moments with the Double Denim Queen, Lorely, herself. She had a Nike shirt on that made me feel like a absolute chump. It was maybe the 3rd or 4th show I’d seen of hers in a row (Bowery, Chicago…?). Demarco, Rambo & Papa Schreiber were all there.  I met Bonni Wong for the first time and she is the most majestic woman since Ingrid Chavez. Ethan “Suit” Silverman had the MOON shirt on. It was the best night ever.

Lo-Lo Ro-Ro

By THIS point, I had somehow miraculously been accepted to sing back up for Uncle Dev in Blood Orange. It was the musical project which had catapulted my NY imagination, and then the  Cupid Deluxe release party came around. Thankfully (foolishly?) I got to join some of the best people in the world (John “Naturalius” Kirby, Ginyard, Egan, Ben Morseberger of Cable, Caroline Polacheck {of Chairlift, who especially with Patrick, I owe nearly every experience to}, Alec Reinstein aka The Greatest Rapper Ever aka Despot, Daddy Dave Longstreth, Samantha Urbani and others) on stage for my 3rd BO Show. Herman Suri, Dap, Le1f, Elise Peterson, Saada, John-Mercer, Justin & Imogene Strauss were all there and most of us danced the night away. Friends, I thankfully call them. Last thing I remember was dancing to “Oh Sheila”, which was perfect, to say the least.

Here’s when we got up on “Uncle Ace”…

Then we Got Down on “Uncle Ace” …

And so it was.

ACE

It wasn’t until we left. In a cab with Dev & Sam: philosophizing on Lana vs. Lorde and the responsibilities vs. requirements of puppy adoption (which ironically 2 days later would manifest in the presence of Cupid  R.I.P) when I realized what just happened. I had performed at Kent and a dream had come true, thanks to Dev & all those involved. I am forever grateful for your trust in me that you show. For a man who has recently lost many things, I hope you don’t lose the memories and blessings you’ve bestowed upon others like me. Thanks Gosling.

Gosling

However, 285 never stopped giving through it all. Even though my buddy Dave didn’t get to see me perform, I didn’t get to see him perform either. Schooling schedule kept me from seeing him fulfill the other half of our dream. After being signed with Ghostly International, Lord Raja laid it down RIGHT HERE at 285. He in all black, me in all white. Darkness & Purity. Happy cliches, because thats what friends are for & that is what dreams are made of : )

All in all, Kent gave me what it gave many many people: memories & memories we will carry for longer than we know. I will continue my journey to find the funk and reconnect the Mothership.

Thanks Todd P,

*Starchild*
